NABARD Pilot Project for ‘Augmenting Farm Productivity in Balasore district of Odisha’
NABARD formulated a Pilot Project for ‘Augmenting Farm Productivity in Balasore district of Odisha’ and is being implemented from Kharif season of 2012. The District was identified for implementing the project due to several factors such as:
- Predominantly an agrarian district with no alternative potential.
- Predominantly small and marginal farmer centric crop production.
- very small agricultural land holding size (0.93 ha.), which is much lesser than the state average (1.25 ha)
- one of the most natural disaster-prone districts of Odisha, especially prone to flash floods, which affect the productivity of kharif paddy
- productivity of paddy, the pre-dominant crop in the district being lower than the state average despite higher levels of fertilizer usage
- Wide gap between the average productivity in district and that of intra-district productivity highlighting the potential and need for improvement
The Pilot Projects targets at:
- Augmenting production and productivity of 3-4 major crops and allied sectors
- Increasing the income level of the farmers
- Reduction in the cost of production through timely availability of and effective management of forward and backward linkages
- Securing better price for the produce by way of value addition (e.g grading, cleaning. Primary processing, storing and marketing)
- Strengthening technology transfer system, providing of crop advisory services and to create a system to promote farm equipment and machinery hubs for hiring
Involving various Government Departments, KVK, Banks, NGOs and farmers to provide services in the key areas.
Farmers’ Club is a grassroot level informal forum. Such Clubs are organised by rural branches of Banks, NGOs and KVKs etc. with support and financial assistance from NABARD for mutual benefit of banks and the farmers.
The objective of the programme is “Development through credit, technology transfer, awareness and capacity building”. The emphasis of the programme is on increasing the income of the farmers by increasing the production & productivity by adopting appropriate technology, good agricultural practices, and proper use of credit and marketing skills.
Systematic Rice Intensification (SRI) Method of Cultivation:
Major interventions under SRI include :
- Average increase in grain productivity reported at 30% with substantial increase in straw yield.
- In condition of poor rainfall, drought tolerant variety used under SRI method has done comparatively well.
- Number of effective tiller per hill and number of grains per panicle have shown significant increase under SRI.
- The seed requirement under SRI is 2-2.5 Kg/ acre of paddy as against 20-25 Kg / acre under traditional cultivation.
- Cost of cultivation was observed to be reduced while income level of small and marginal farmers has increased
Pilot Project on Augmenting Productivity of Lead Crops
NABARD launched the ‘Pilot Project on augmenting productivity of lead crops / activities through adoption of Sustainable Agricultural Practices’ to bridge the yield gap of lead crops through adoption of sustainable agricultural practices, cost reduction and value addition, resulting in improved standards of living of the rural farming community.
Major interventions under Lead Crop Scheme include :
- Identification of Lead Farmers for each of the identified Lead Crops by the Project Facilitating Agencies (PFAs)
- Lying of season-specific and crop-specific comprehensive demonstrations by the identified Lead Farmers.
- Crop-specific demonstrations on Green maturing, NADEP composting, production of bio fertilizers (azolla), drum seeding technology, sprinklers in ground nut, etc.
- Transfer of improved crop production technologies
- Technology transfer and awareness creation through exposure visits, Field Days and End of Season Workshops
- Promoting seed production for the selected crop varieties
- Establishing Common Service Centres or Small Tool/ Farm Machinery Banks
- Training of farmers on soil sample collection and undertaking analysis in the existing labs of KVKs and Department of Agriculture.
ARM Has been successfully implemented the NABARD Pilot project in Baliapal and Bhogarai Block of Balasore District in Odisha and the achievements are as follows since the year 2012 to : 2015

The Farmers of the project area has given knowledge through training, meetings, Workshop, Exposure visit, observation of Field days, Motivational camps, Video Show for the increase in production with the following new technology of cultivation :
- Preparation and use of NADEP compost pit for organic farming
- Preparation and use of Vermin compost Pit for organic farming
- Preparation and use of Azzola Pit for organic farming
- Promotion and use of Bio fertilizer to increase the health of soil
- Change of traditional seed to HYV seed for flood resistance and more production
- Promotion and use of Pheromone traps for the reduction of insects in the agriculture field
- Promotion and use of use of Trico card in the agriculture field to control the insects
- Promotion of summer ploughing for the reduction of insects, weed control, Increase in Nitrogen in the soil, increase in water resistance capacity of soil
- Promotion of seed treatment to control disease in the agriculture and reduction in cost of production
- Promotion of T- Stand (Bird Rest Place) to control insects
- 33% Increase in production of the farmer
- 32% Decrease in cost of production of the farmer
- Promotion of soil testing to know the requirement of fertilizer and control the unnecessary use
- Promotion of Farm mechanisation for the cultivation to reduce the cost of labour in agriculture.
